Manchester United's clash against Huddersfield was supposed to be the perfect opportunity to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Spurs in midweek.

And while they did get back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory, the first half didn't quite work out like that.

United were frustrated by the visitors, with Huddersfield coming off the back of a 3-0 battering by Liverpool, and the home side were unable to break the Terriers' resistance.

Mourinho reacted to Wednesday night's shattering defeat by dropping Paul Pogba, Ashley Young and Anthony Martial from his starting line-up, and they were replaced by Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw and Juan Mata.

And the latter was heavily involved when United eventually got the opener in the second half, curling in a delightful cross for Romelu Lukaku to strike.

But the big talking point came in the first half, with another of the replacements at the centre of things.

Scott McTominay skewed a shot which looped up into the air, and as he went to challenge for it he was pole-axed by Terence Kongolo.

Somehow, referee Stuart Atwell decided the challenge wasn't worthy of a penalty, which you can see below.

WATCH:

Kongolo is late and reckless, and unquestionably threatened the safety of McTominay, who gave the referee a piece of his mind afterwards.

Atwell was right on the spot to see the incident too, and it is extraordinary how he didn't see fit to point to the spot.

Fortunately, it didn't come back to haunt Atwell, with United going on to record a much-needed victory, closing the gap on Manchester City to 13 points.

United did manage to get a penalty in the end to aid the win, with Alexis Sanchez converting his first goal for the club at the second attempt, after Jonas Lossl saved his spot kick.
