You get the impression that it’s going to be a very important summer as far as Manchester United are concerned.

United are set to finish behind Manchester City in the league having been unable to compete with their city rivals this season. And Jose Mourinho will be looking to strengthen to ensure that doesn’t happen again next campaign.

In fact, they’ve already started doing just that with the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in the January transfer window.

And despite the window only just closing, Mourinho has already identified the one player he wants to sign in the summer.

The boss has made no secret that he will be looking to buy a midfielder with Michael Carrick retiring and doubts over the future of Marouane Fellaini.

JOSE MOURINHO: I NEED A MIDFIELDER

"I think in attack it’s very difficult for us to improve," Mourinho admitted.

"Where are we going to get a better combination of players than we have? ‘We cannot buy Messi, we cannot buy Cristiano. These are the best players of the last decade. Where can we get better players than Mata, Martial, Lingard, Rashford, Sanchez, Lukaku? So, in attack, we have an amazing group of players. In midfield, Michael Carrick will be not the No.16.

"Who will have Michael Carrick in his shirt next season, so we lose a player. It’s there in midfield where we need to improve but to get a player to compensate the situation of Michael.

"If Fellaini leaves we have two gaps there so let’s see what happens. But in relation to Fellaini the good thing is he wants to stay with us and we would like him to stay with us. To sign a contract the person must be happy and let’s see."

WHO MOURINHO WANTS TO SIGN

But who will that midfielder be?

Well, according to Manchester Evening News, it will be Arturo Vidal.

They’re reporting that Mourinho has identified the Bayern Munich star as the ideal replacement for Carrick and wants to add more “maturity” to his squad.

The 30-year-old could be allowed to leave the Bavarians with the arrival of Leon Goretska on a free transfer. And with former Juventus teammate Paul Pogba and fellow Chilean Sanchez already at Old Trafford, Vidal could be very tempted to join Mourinho’s side.

The report also states that the club have scouted Borussia Dortmund duo Julian Weigl and Christian Pulisic and have shortlisted Napoli midfielder Jorginho.

But it seems it’s Vidal that Mourinho really wants.
