Every now and then a goal is scored that will throw you to the edge of your seat and make you say 'wow' or 'holy *something*' or whatever it is you usually say when you see a truly breathtaking goal.

FIFA introduced the Puskas Award in 2009 as a way of celebrating these goals on a global scale.

It has helped bring the spotlight to those moments of magic that light up football no matter where in the world it happens - even, famously, in the Irish women's national league when Stephanie Roche rivalled James Rodriguez for the best goal of 2014.

The 2011 edition of the award shone the spotlight on a 19-year-old Brazilian who demonstrated such ridiculous skill that people had to admit that maybe all the talk around him was justified - 18 months later, Neymar was off to Barcelona.

2016 saw Lionel Messi pushed to one side as a goal from the Malaysian Super-League took the award.

And so if a goal can find a little bit of extra magic by surprising you with where it's from, the one Ignacio Scocco scored for River Plate on Saturday arguably has just that.

Some, although certainly not many, may remember that name from the Argentine's brief time as a Sunderland player who managed zero goals in eight games - all as a substitute.

That record doesn't exactly suggest that he's a player who can get you out of your seat through incredible ability, but then football isn't that simple.

The 32-year-old has found his groove back home, proving himself enough to secure a move to one of the biggest sides in South America, the legendary River Plate.

Los Millonarios faced Olimpo in the Argentine Superliga on Saturday, and with the team 1-0 up with ten minutes to go, Scocco stole the show with a goal that will surely be a top contender for the 2018 Puskas award.

You can check out the goal below:

River would win the game 2-0, but remain 16th in the Superliga - a huge 15 points behind arch-rivals Boca Juniors despite having played a game more.

The great side sold their two brightest lights in the summer to European sides on big money - Sebastian Driussi to Zenit St Petersburg and Lucas Alario to Bayer Leverkusen - and despite Scocco's goals, have struggled to replace them.

The arrival of Lucas Pratto last month from Sao Paulo is hoped to be the answer as River hope to catch up with the rampant Boca.
