What a game that was. Super Bowl 52 may well go down as the greatest Super Bowl in the history of the NFL.David vs Goliath. Backup vs legendary quarterback. 2nd-year head coach vs the greatest mastermind the National Football League has ever seen. And David won. They didn't fluke their way to the win either. They played lights out. Nick Foles proved that he is legit by turning up on the grandest stage, under the brightest lights, and putting in an MVP-worthy display with some incredible throws that beggared belief. But he did that all against a Patriots defense that was missing a piece, a key piece that Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia chose to keep on the bench. 3 years after making one of the most unbelievable plays in Super Bowl history, Malcolm Butler didn't play a single snap on defense all game long as Belichick chose to freeze him out. Instead, Belichick decided to turn over his cornerback 2 spot to Patrick Chung and Eric Rowe, who proceeded to get beat deep by Alshon Jeffery for a big touchdown, and later Johnson Bademosi - who has only really played this season as a special teams gunner. He played a gunner over one of his best corners. And Butler kept sitting on that bench as time after time, Nick Foles sliced and diced the Patriots defense. Butler hasn't been amazing this season, we can admit that, but he had played in 98% of all the Patriots defensive snaps. That is more experience with the scheme and muscle memory than anyone else on the defense. Keeping him on the bench was suicide. And Belichick fell on his sword. And the Eagles were ecstatic to see Butler riding the pine.

“After the first series or two. We were like, ‘This guy’s not in the game! They have 23 [Patrick Chung] in there," an Eagles assistant coach said. "That’s crazy!’”

Speaking after the game, Matt Patricia said that Butler didn't get in the game because of the packages the Patriots ran.

Just a quick one for Patricia - the future Detroit Lions head coach - if your defense is giving up 41 points in the Super Bowl, then your packages aren't working buddy.

Bill Belichick also gave a pretty lame excuse. "We put the best -- the players out there and the game plan out there that we thought would be the best tonight like we always do," he said, convincing no one.

Belichick is probably the greatest coach in NFL history. But last night, he made one change too far, and it cost him dearly.
