Football News

Wayne Rooney most certainly has a future in punditry judging by his debut on Monday Night Football for the Watford vs Chelsea game.

Insightful and entertaining, the 32-year-old surprised viewers with how relaxed he was in the studio - even Jamie Carragher and host David Jones were impressed.

Carragher wrote on Twitter: "One of the best @SkySportsMNF I can remember! @WayneRooney fantastic & a great game as well!!"

And Jones added: "Well from where I was sitting @WayneRooney was brilliant tonight."

Few careers compare to Rooney's, especially in the Premier League, so it was inevitable he would have plenty of stories to tell in front of the cameras on MNF.

From his bust-up with Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2006 World Cup, to playing under Sir Alex Ferguson and his rivalry with Carragher, Rooney pulled no punches when asked the important questions.

It was important he made the perfect start on his punditry debut, though, and he did just that by hilariously trolling Carragher within 10 seconds.

Manchester United v Liverpool - Premier League

In the video below, Jones says to Rooney: "I want you to think of tonight as your chance to have your say. Are you ready and are you looking forward to it?"

To which Rooney fired shots at Carragher by saying it's the closest Carragher has ever got to him, having played against each other for Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

He replied: "Yeah I'm looking forward to it, it's great to be here. To be honest it's the closest Carragher [has] ever got to me, so I'm sure he'll enjoy it as well."

Jones pretty much summed up Rooney's jibe by then saying: "The perfect start - you've brought your A game!"
