Wayne Rooney brought no shortage of entertainment to Monday Night Football with fantastic insight and brilliant anecdotes.

The Everton man looked on as Chelsea slumped to a dramatic 4-1 loss at the hands of Watford and sunk his teeth into his illustrious Manchester United career. Alongside Jamie Carragher in the Sky studio, it was glorious television.

One of the biggest topics of discussion lied with arguably the finest United side that Rooney played with in his 13 year career at Old Trafford - the team of 2008.

With the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar in the team, the Red Devils came an FA Cup away from replicating the treble winning side of 1999.

They, of course, won the second Champions League title of the Sir Alex Ferguson era with that famous night in Moscow.

The brilliant Man Utd team of 2007-08

Thanks in no small part to John Terry's clumsy footage on the sodden Russian turf, United saw out a nerve-shredding penalty shootout to bag the trophy the deserved.

Rooney had time to reflect on the attacking trio behind that side, too, which saw him line up with Ronaldo and who he considers his favourite ever strike partner - Carlos Tevez.

The 32-year-old reflected: "Alex Ferguson used to let us attack how we wanted but if you’re on the wing, you had to track back on the wing.

"We had a good compromise because me and Tevez would do a lot more work defensively than Cristiano.

"But with Cristiano, you knew he would win us those big games with the big moments. With any other player, you probably wouldn’t but with Cristiano, he was that good you had to accommodate him.

"I would gladly do that for him to score big goals and help us win trophies.”

The conversation then drifted to Liverpool's attack by comparison and Rooney had some words of praise for the Reds.

“I think they are very dangerous. Firmino works very hard to win the ball back and they have a lot of pace. As good as they are, Salah takes them to the next level."

Nevertheless, that classic United-Liverpool rivalry returned when Rooney was prompted to dually compare the two attacking triumvirates. It's fair to say he put it as it is.

The difference between 2008 Man Utd and 2018 Liverpool

“The difference we had is Premier League winners’ medals.

"We had real quality behind us and the defence was solid.

"For them three to get to the level we were at, they need that wall behind them.”

Brutal, but so true.

There can be little doubting that Liverpool have one of the finest attacking line-ups in Europe at the moment, yet they can't stand up to a trio boasting England's all-time top scorer and a five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

Sorry, Mane.
