Butt: 'Gomes has a long way to go'

Gomes, who has represented England at Under-18 level, signed his first professional contract in December.

And according to Butt, he’s fully aware that he’s going to have to work exceptionally hard to make the first team at Old Trafford.

“It’s not a case of signing the contract and going straight into the first team,” the head of Man United’s academy said

“He’s a bright lad and he knows he has got a long way to go to stamp his authority in the first team.

“He needs to get in the reserves, settle in there, become a dominant player at reserve-team level and step up.”

Gomes, who joined Man United as a six-year-old and became the first player born in the 2000s to appear in the Premier League last year, is no doubt aware that he has a chance to join a long number of successful academy graduates at Old Trafford.
