Virgil van Dijk has come back down to earth in recent weeks following his dream debut for Liverpool.

The £75 million defender scored the winner against Everton in the FA Cup last month but has since been a part of defeats to Swansea and West Bromwich Albion.

And it was Van Dijk who conceded the penalty that allowed Harry Kane to equalise for Tottenham in last weekend’s thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Every player makes mistakes but football fans pay more attention to those committed by the most expensive defender on the planet.

Indeed, Van Dijk knows that’s the case.

“Because I made such a big step right now, for a lot of money, I know everything is going to analysed,” he said this week, per the Telegraph.

“No one is going to look at the good things that you do. Everybody is going to watch the bad things and that is how it is.”

Matt Le Tissier: Van Dijk isn't a one-man solution

Van Dijk will hope to bounce back when he returns to Southampton on Sunday, and Saints legend Matt Le Tissier has dropped a truth bomb about the 26-year-old.

In Le Tissier’s opinion, Van Dijk needs to cut out the lapses in concentration - and he isn’t a one-man fix for Liverpool’s defensive errors.

"He has captaincy potential, but there's also part of him which just switches off when it is a bit too easy, which if he's going to be a captain he has to eradicate from his game," Le Tissier told Sky Sports.

"Van Dijk won't be a one-man fix for their defensive errors alone and [Dejan] Lovren has escaped a bit of criticism for his error which led to Kane's first penalty because of the controversy.

"I think if Liverpool have realistic ambitions of the title then I think they need a better centre-back partner and goalkeeper.

“Joe Gomez has the potential to be a top defender but Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan don't look up to it."

Liverpool fans will definitely agree with that last part.

Le Tissier continued by claiming Van Dijk is among the best centre-backs in England.

“There’s definitely more to come from him,” he said. “Before his injury he was right up there with the best centre-backs in the Premier League, although Toby Alderweireld is perhaps a fraction better all-round defender because of that consistency.”
