Lionel Messi wasn't messing about when he took to the pitch against Valencia last night.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is enjoying a fantastic start to the season and Barcelona are poised to  hoard silverware in the coming months. A 2-0 victory at the Mestalla was enough for Blaugrana to book themselves a place in the Copa del Rey final.

It was a special evening for all concerned at the club with Philippe Coutinho bagging his first goal for the club, via some old magic from Luis Suarez, before Ivan Rakitic closed out the game.

And although Messi didn't write his name on the scoresheet, Barcelona's star man put in another glittering performance as the best player on the pitch.

In fact, Barcelona were so dominant in the fixture that Messi could be seen walking with the ball, playing redundant one-twos with Rakitic and having Francis Coquelin practically strip him down to try and stop him.

Lionel Messi's incredible run v Valencia

Even when the game was thoroughly competitive, though, Messi was still taking the mickey.

One run in particular has gone viral for its effortless skill and utter humiliation of José Luis Gayà.

Collecting the ball on the right wing, the 30-year-old sweetly nutmegged his adversary who proceeded to flop to the turf and helplessly attempt to pull him back.

He then, naturally, galloped forward and caused absolute havoc.

It's a moment of pure genius that is made all the more perfect when filmed from the stands and one supporter saw the run from just metres away. The gasp of the crowd says everything - take a look at the clip below:

Fan footage of Messi's brilliance

Just imagine seeing that live, Messi really is on another planet.

Valencia didn't have it in their locker to contain the Barcelona star and few teams have this season with the Argentinian looking set to wrestle back the Ballon d'Or after two seasons.

And when you're dropping professional defenders as easily as that, you can't say it's anything but justified.
