When the Philadelphia 76ers moved up to take Markelle Fultz with the No. 1 pick in the 2017 Draft, it seemed as though their self-proclaimed period of “trusting the process” was finally complete. After all, the point guard was absolutely dominant in his one-and-done season at the University of Washington. averaging 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 35.7 minutes per contest over 25 games played. As an athletic, 6’4” ball-handler, Fultz was immediately expected to slot in Philadelphia’s lineup alongside Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid to make up perhaps the best young trio in the entire league. Possessing an ability to drive to the rim and finish at the hoop, Fultz was also a deadly shooter at Washington, knocking down 47.6 percent of his shots, including 41.3 percent of his three-point attempts. But, the NBA has treated him much differently.Playing just four games due to a shoulder issue, Fultz has averaged 6.0 points on 33.3 percent shooting and has added 2.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 19.0 minutes per contest. His rehab has been very confusing. Despite seemingly regaining health in his shoulder, it appears as though he completely lost his ability to shoot the basketball, as you can see below.

As a result, he will have to completely rebuild the muscle memory of his shooting stroke.

On Friday, the team provided an update on Fultz’s progress and it wasn’t very optimistic in nature.

"It's within the paint, basically," 76ers general manager Bryan Colangelo said about Fultz’s current shooting range, per ESPN. "Paint shots. Perimeter shots are where you kind of draw a line.”

It’s obvious that the team will not rush him back until he’s back to full health with full confidence on the floor. Therefore, they’re not putting a timetable on his return.

"There's always a chance that he's going to be out there soon, and there's a chance that he's not going to play this year," Colangelo said. "I can't answer that question because we don't know the answer."

"He's doing some things on the basketball court, in the limited basketball activity that he's taking place in, that he's participating in, and he's dazzling in many ways," Colangelo noted. "But when he's ready to help his team and be ready, I can't give you a timeline.”

Based on the spectacular campaigns of Simmons and Embiid, the Sixers will be a team to watch if Fultz returns and can produce down the stretch heading towards a possible playoff run.
