Greg Monroe was the first notable player to be bought out when the Phoenix Suns recently set him free.He then signed with the Boston Celtics and could end up being a major piece of their puzzle down the stretch of the season and into the playoffs. But, he’s not the only big-named player that has the potential to be bought out.Tyreke Evans of the Memphis Grizzlies and Joe Johnson of the Sacramento Kings are rumored to be logical candidates to be set free in the near future, but someone beat them to the punch. Here’s a hint: he averaged 11.4 points per game and went 92-for-247 (37.2 percent) from three-point range in 52 games. If you guessed Marco Belinelli, you’d be correct. The Atlanta Hawks bought him out on Friday.According to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Consitution, Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said the move was made to give young players more minutes and also to give Belinelli an opportunity to suit up for a playoff contender. Budenholzer said rookie guard Tyler Dorsey, who has seen an influx in playing time lately, will be the primary beneficiary of Belinelli’s minutes. DeAndre Bembry, Malcolm Delaney and Isaiah Taylor could also see more time.“It was the right thing for both of us,” Budenholzer noted. “We’ve been playing Tyler Dorsey and some of the younger guys more recently and we’d like to do more of that down the stretch here. Obviously, it’s a time where Marco can help a team that is in a different situation than we are.”“I want to say Marco was great for us,” the coach explained. “He was a great teammate. He’s a great teammate and smart. Wherever he ends up, he’s going to help that team. I enjoyed coaching him.”ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was quick to report that several contenders were interested in the veteran sharpshooter’s services.

Since Belinelli was waived, he could still be claimed for up to 48 hours after the transaction was finalized. But, based on the fact that the three teams with available cap room are not in playoff contention, picking the Italian up wouldn’t make much sense.

Wojnarowski reported that the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder were interested in trading for Belinelli before the deadline. Based on a number of verified Twitter users, it also seems as though the Miami Heat were also showing some interest.

Since all four are most likely going to be playoff-bound clubs, any one would be a legitimate landing spot for the 10-year veteran.
