There’s plenty of excitement in the air as we look forward to the UFC 226 event where Stipe Miocic puts his heavyweight crown on the line against light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

Both Cormier and Miocic were in action at UFC 220 in Boston where DC retained his crown against Volkan Oezdemir while Miocic made easy work of the threat that is Francis N’gannou as he retained his heavyweight championship.

SUPER FIGHT

Many were left thinking what could be next for both men after their impressive victories, with UFC president Dana White teasing the idea that DC could move back up to heavyweight in a super fight against Miocic and that came to fruition not too long ago. Both men are now coaches on the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter which culminates in their super fight.

Former Miocic victim Fabricio Werdum - who lost the championship to Miocic in Brazil - has had his say on the fight and admitted that originally he was upset that he wasn’t next in line. However, he now understands where the UFC is coming from and is looking forward to the fight and hoping he gets the winner.

Speaking on The MMA Hour, Vai Cavalo said: “I want to see this fight, too. Of course, I want to go first, but for the business UFC, for fans this is much better. I understand this part, too.

“For sure I was sad before, but after talking to Dana White, I understand for the company, business is much better. I hope I’m the next one after my fight.”

PREDICTION

Werdum considers Cormier a good friend and has witnessed his evolution, but believes he will still fall short in the super fight against Miocic.

Werdum added: “I love Cormier, he’s my good friend for a long time. One day, he is just a wrestling guy. I talk about the time I take him down three times, training with him, and he say that all the time, too.

“He was just a wrestling guy, but now he is more complete. He’s a good boxer, wrestling and jiu-jitsu. But, I think Stipe Miocic beat him by points.”

Miocic has staked his claim as being one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. But if DC can defy the odds and join Conor McGregor in an elite group by becoming the second man in history in holding two championships in two different weight divisions at the same time, he too can enter the conversation as the greatest of all time.
