New-look Cavs crush Celtics; Rockets beat Mavs; Jazz win ninth straight

Cleveland Cavaliers v Boston Celtics

The Minnesota Timberwolves extended their home winning streak to 13 games with victory over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night.

It was a slow start for the Timberwolves, who were behind by five at the end of the third quarter, but a powerful fourth quarter lifted them to the 111-106 win.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 29 points and Jeff Teague added 12 points, while 15 of Jimmy Butler’s 18 points came in the second half.

The Kings dominated the start of the game, but with 19 turnovers across the night, the Wolves were able to fightback and will now be looking to tie the record for most consecutive home wins when they face the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Celtics fans could only celebrate the retirement of Paul Pierce’s jersey as Boston were defeated by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After a 15-year career, the 40-year-old’s number 34 jersey was officially honoured by the Celtics as the crowd chanted their thanks to the player who made 1,823 three-pointers for the team.

On the court, however, LeBron James gave the home side little to cheer about as he scored 24 points with 10 assists and eight rebounds to give the Cavs a 121-99 win.

Paul George helped the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 110-92 win against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The soon-to-be free agent scored 22 points to put the Thunder back to winning ways after previously recording five losses in six.

Alex Abrines added 16 points for Oklahoma, while Marc Gasol’s 18 points were not enough to snap the Grizzlies six-game losing streak.

Indiana’s Victor Oladipo excited the crowd with a slam dunk over the New York Knicks’ Kyle O’Quinn as the Pacers claimed a 121-113 victory, while the Charlotte Hornets were defeated 103-123 by the Toronto Raptors in their first home game in nine days.

Elsewhere, Andre Drummond top scored with 25 points for Detroit, but it wasn’t enough as Atlanta beat the Pistons 118-155.

The Houston Rockets beat the Dallas Mavericks 104-97 while the Utah Jazz triumphed 115-96 at the Portland Trail Blazers.
