George Grove and Chris Eubank Jr. are set to fight this weekend in the semi-final of the World Boxing Super Series.

The knockout tournament has been an unmitigated success over the past six months, and on Saturday, two of Britain’s best fighters will go toe-to-toe.

In anticipation of the event, the one-time 'I’m A Celebrity' contestant Chris Eubank Sr, spoke to Boxing News to give his thoughts on his son’s upcoming fight.

Though the full article is yet to be released, a few snippets that didn’t make the magazine cut have surfaced online, and it’s fair to say that the former champion is feeling confident of a win.

Reminiscing about the sparring sessions which Groves and Jr had in the past, he explains: “I engineered these sparring sessions to happen because if you can beat them in sparring, you can beat them in a real fight. The only difference is, there is no decision at the end of the sparring session. “

Never one to miss an opportunity to talk about his favourite subject (himself), Eubank Sr went on to talk about the importance of these early spars.

“I sparred with Rod Douglas and he tore me to pieces because he was fighting maybe three or four days after the sparring session. He tore me to pieces, and I knew how good he was, because I knew how good I was, I was determined.

"Johnny Melfah, I knew I was going to fight him in the future so it made sense for us to both know who was the boss. That is using your intelligence, in this world of boxing.

"At the time, whenever I could find a sparring partner who was in the Top 10 or 20, I would spar them. It made sense to me and so why wouldn’t I use that same method with my son?”

His credibility in boxing and pedigree as a trainer is unquestioned, after defending his WBO super-middleweight title 14 times, and now helping his son reach an impressive 26-1 record.

Eubank Senior’s poetic tongue is always one well worth paying attention to; even if he does mention himself a little too much.

When pushed on why he believes in his son so much ahead of his next fight, Sr was very specific in his answer.

"After that sparring session I said [to Junior], ‘You got him?’ He said, ‘Yes, I got him.’

"So am I worried about George Groves? No. Why? Because I know. I’m not guesstimating here. Beat the fighter only once, even three, four years before the real fight happens, and that person knows. And you know.

“In a profound way, you become knowledgeable about what you can do [in regard to beating Groves in training]. The truth is, when you know you can beat somebody, you can. It’s as simple as that. I’m looking at one thing, and one thing only. Spirit. And that’s what separates Junior from the rest of them.”

We’ll see if that spirit is on full display on Saturday night, and whether it is enough to get Eubank Junior win number 27, and a place in the Super Series final.
