World number one Michael van Gerwen defeated Scotsman Gary Anderson to record his second victory of the 2018 Premier League Darts tournament in Newcastle on Thursday, but one enthralling leg in particular stood out in the compelling contest."MVG" would have been confident of securing a break of throw midway through the fifth leg of the match as he opened up with seven perfect darts.Van Gerwen had thrown two consecutive 180's and required 141 to take a 3-2 advantage in the match as he returned to the oche. The Dutchman was successful in hitting treble 20 with his seventh dart, but was then unable to secure treble 19, which would have given him a dart to secure the leg.Anderson, for his part, had been scoring steadily throughout the leg, but was still a considerable underdog for victory after nine darts had been thrown by both players.Anderson, the fourth-ranked player in the world, still required an unlikely 170 to take the leg whilst Van Gerwen sat poised on just 60, ready to capitalise if "The Flying Scotsman" did not successfully achieve the largest possible checkout in darts.Incredibly, Anderson held his nerve, reeling off two shots at treble 20 before taking the leg in spectacular fashion by hitting the bullseye with his final dart. The adrenaline of such a sensational sequence of events clearly took its toll on Anderson, though, as he went on to miss multiple darts at a double in the three legs that followed, eventually losing the match 7-3.Van Gerwen hit seven 180's and averaged 110.62 on route to victory, avenging his 2015 defeat to Anderson in the final of the same competition.

The former two-time world champion will also have been pleased to rebound from his 7-5 defeat to Peter Wright in last week's round of fixtures and now sits third in the Premier League table.

Anderson more than played his part in a thrilling match, averaging 110.79 and landing four 180's and two scores of 177.

However, Anderson has now lost two of his first three Premier League matches this season and sits sixth in the competition standings.

He will be hoping that his fortunes improve when he faces Peter Wright in Berlin next week.
