Mohamed Salah has exceeded all expectations since completing his £36.9 million move to Liverpool from AS Roma last summer.

The Egyptian winger scored his 30th goal of the season in the Reds’ 5-0 win over Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday evening - a genuinely extraordinary return.

Salah became the first Liverpool player to break the 30-goal mark for a season since Luis Suarez during the 2013-14 campaign. Suarez netted 31 goals that season. Salah could - and perhaps should given his remarkable goals-to-games ratio - hit at least 40 this term.

At this rate, Liverpool will have a job on their hands retaining Salah’s services.

If his magnificent goalscoring form continues, it won’t be long before Europe’s biggest clubs - namely Real Madrid - start sniffing around.

However, despite all the deserved praise and adulation, there is one former Liverpool player who doesn’t appear to be entirely convinced by Salah.

John Barnes' comments about Salah are... odd

John Barnes, such an important player for Liverpool back in the day, has made comments about the in-form winger that will baffle just about every member of the Anfield faithful.

The 54-year-old, who recently appeared on Celebrity Big Brother, has doubts that Salah will score goals so consistently over the coming seasons.

Furthermore, he reckons Liverpool need a ‘proper’ goalscorer, despite the fact Salah and Roberto Firmino have scored 51 goals between them this season.

“They need better all-round players,” Barnes said on talkSPORT. “The front-three are great, but I don’t feel that they are necessarily going to continue to do this for the next two or three years.

“Salah is not a centre forward, I don’t think he is a player who can score goals consistently over a period of time. We don’t have players like that."

Barnes: Liverpool need better individual players

He added: “We have players like Salah and Mane and, although [Sadio] Mane scored a hat-trick against Porto, they are not out-and-out goalscorers.

“So, as funny as it may seem, I think if they could get a centre forward, a penalty box player and play Firmino slightly deeper, I think it will be better for the balance of the team.

“Yes, we’re scoring lots of goals but can we see Mane and Salah continuing to score this amount of goals on a regular basis? I think we need to get better individual players now.”

No wonder his managerial career was a disaster

Erm… if you say so, John.

It suddenly makes sense why his managerial career was a complete disaster.

In fact, it’s difficult to imagine any Liverpool fans actually agreeing with Barnes’ bizarre statement.

Salah has proven that he can score goals consistently, so what’s to stop him doing the same thing over the next couple of seasons?

Firmino, meanwhile, has arguably established his status as Liverpool’s most important player this season. Jurgen Klopp’s attack-minded system is built around the brilliant Brazil international.
