After Spencer Dinwiddie won the Taco Bell Skills Challenge and Devin Booker was crowned the Long Distance Shootout champion, the most anticipated event of 2018 NBA All-Star Saturday took place.Utah Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Larry Nance Jr., Dallas Mavericks rookie Dennis Smith Jr. and Indiana Pacers All-Star starter Victor Oladipo captivated the NBA community with their mesmerizing dunk skills. Before the competition, Mitchell explained how surreal the moment would be for him.“I've been to Staples before. But with the All-Star on the court, just kind of seeing all that has been pretty crazy for me,” he said. “Just being here and being part of this weekend … as a kid, you dreamed about watching it. When I was a kid, my favorite event was the Slam Dunk Contest.”He added, “So just being here now and playing in it, being in the event where there are no teammates in the Slam Dunk Contest. It's all on you. I've never been in a position like that where millions of people are watching just me. So it will be interesting and fun.”Judging by his performance, he handled the spotlight very well and captured the first of what could end up being many championships in the event.Of the four players, it was obvious that Mitchell’s creativity was on another level. He brought out a second hoop on his first attempt and angled his self ally-oop perfectly:

Then, he brought out his sister, comedian and actor Kevin Hart and Hart’s son and dunked over all of them, gathering a pass off the side of the backboard:

He earned his first 50 of the night on that one.

Advancing to the final round against Nance, Mitchell threw the ball off the backboard, gathered it at its lowest point, and performed a jaw-dropping windmill for his second perfect score:

Finally, he paid homage to dunking legend Vince Carter with an eye-popping tribute:

He needed a 46 to win and that dunk gave him a 48 and the title.

Two other memorable dunks in the competition belonged to Nance and Smith Jr.

In his final dunk, Nance completed an insane double-tap:

In the first round, Smith had arguably the best and most difficult dunk of the entire competition when he completed a between-the-legs, 360-degree, reverse attempt:

Although the competition didn’t quite live up to the showing from Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine from a couple of years ago, it proved that Mitchell’s athleticism will make him a factor in future events. Using props, his creativity also was a pleasant surprise and clearly set him apart from his opponents.
