David Goffin certainly hasn’t lived up to his usual high standards so far in 2018.The World No. 7 crashed out of the Australian Open second round at the hands of France’s Julian Benneteau after stumbling past German Matthias Bachinger in four sets.Considering he reached the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park the year before, it was a hugely disappointing result and his form has since shown few signs of returning to its best.At his next tournament in Liege, Goffin fell to Marton Fucsovics of Hungary at the second hurdle, compounding his difficult start to the new season. The 27-year-old then bested the likes of Gilles Simon and Karen Khachanov before succumbing to the experienced Richard Gasquet at the Montpellier final four.It was definitely an improvement on his performances of late and clearly provided a confidence boost going into the Rotterdam Open.Goffin began to look like his usual self again in Holland, brushing aside Nicolas Mahut and Feliciano Lopez in his first two matches. The Belgian was given a free pass into the semi-finals due to Tomas Berdych’s withdrawal, setting up an intriguing meeting with World No. 5 Grigor Dimitrov.A win against the crafty Bulgarian would’ve been the perfect tonic for his recent shakiness, but Goffin saw his chances dashed by a hugely unfortunate incident early in the second set. With Dimitrov up 6-3, 0-1, the two-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist ventured towards the net in a bid to throw off his opponent. The strategy backfired in the cruelest way possible, though, as Goffin met a heavy Dimitrov forehand with the frame of his racket, deflecting the ball it into his eye.Ouch. Take a look at how the rally played out in the video below.

Goffin – who retreated to his chair with his face in a towel while he awaited treatment – was in the hands of medical staff for several minutes before deciding to retire.

Let’s not forget, he was the victim of another freak accident at Roland Garros last year when he rolled in his ankle in a tarpaulin cover at the back of the court.

The poor guy just can’t seem to catch a break at the moment.
