Shrewsbury have terminated the contract of manager Paul Simpson with immediate effect.

The decision comes on the eve of the club's penultimate game of the season against Morecambe. The 43-year-old was appointed as Town's manager in March 2008 and took them to the League Two play-off final last season, only for them to suffer a 1-0 defeat to Gillingham.

They have failed to mount a serious challenge for the play-offs this time around, though, and are currently six points adrift of the top-six with two games remaining.

"It is obviously a big wrench to be leaving Shrewsbury Town but I am very proud to have managed the club and to have led them out at Wembley in a play-off final," Simpson said.

"I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all of my staff and players for their professionalism throughout my time at the club.

"Finally I would like to thank the fans for their support and to wish everyone connected with the club success in the future."
