Less than two years into his second Manchester United career and rumours that Paul Pogba is unhappy at Old Trafford have emerged.

The French midfielder, who joined Man United for a then-world record fee of £89 million in 2016, has been in and out of the side in recent weeks and Jose Mourinho had to deny reports that fallen out with the 24-year-old last week.

Pogba was dropped to the bench for the 2-0 win over Huddersfield at the start of the month after failing to impress in a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

He was then taken off in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United and missed Saturday’s FA Cup win over Huddersfield through illness.

Pogba’s best position has been the subject of heavy debate in recent weeks and Frank Lampard has weighed in on the matter.

What Frank Lampard has said about Paul Pogba

Lampard believes Mourinho's recent decisions are an attempt to get more out of Pogba.

"Mourinho loves Pogba, he wants him to be a success. He is not doing this for any other reason other than to extract more out of him and give him a nudge," Lampard told the Evening Standard.

"It is part of the personality of being a top manager that you make these kind of calls regardless."

Lampard: Pogba is not a No.10

Many believe that Pogba should be deployed further forward but the Chelsea legend doesn’t think he has the goalscoring record to warrant being a No.10.

In Lampard’s opinion, Pogba has to learn the defensive side of the game in order to become the complete midfielder.

“I don't think he's a No.10. He doesn't have the goal tally to play there or to be given a free role - that has gone in the modern game," Lampard added.

“But whether you are picked to play in a two-man midfield or three, you have to have defensive discipline, particularly in big games in the Champions League or away to a team like Tottenham at Wembley.

“I used to play in a three-man midfield mostly, but I was also in a two for the last few years of my time at Chelsea and throughout my England career.

“You know when you go into a bigger game that you have to have extra discipline because of what your opponent can do to you.

“So no-one can switch off or have moments out of position. It will damage the team.

“Pogba has to recognise that because he has moments of amazing ability on the ball. He just has to learn that defensive side of the game.

“It's not the same as a comfortable home game against a team near the bottom - of course you can play with more freedom then.

“It is something that has to be addressed. It's easy for people to say the manager should give Pogba whatever he wants.

“He is still relatively young and can be that top all-round player. But I feel he will never be the midfielder to get 20 goals a season regularly so he has to adapt his game going forward and become more complete.”

"It doesn't mean Pogba can't get forward; he just has to be more selective.”
