Once again, Manchester United failed to show up in a big game under Jose Mourinho as they stumbled to a 0-0 draw against Sevilla on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils failed to score a crucial away goal at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán and now their Champions League knockout tie rests on the second leg at Old Trafford in two weeks.

Sevilla edged United in possession and dominated their English counterparts in all the vital statistics, but goalkeeper David de Gea - not for the first time - kept United in the game.

While reporters were keen to interrogate boss Jose Mourinho about several under-performing stars after the game, De Gea's exploits should not have gone unnoticed.

Paul Pobga, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku seem to be commanding a lot of attention for the wrong reasons lately and their performances in Seville was all their critics needed.

But, De Gea proved once again that he is one of the very best 'keepers in the world with a truly special performance in Spain.

Watch De Gea's highlights below where he made a staggering 10 saves:

Speaking after the game, United legend Rio Ferdinand revealed how some of De Gea's first teammates were not sure about the former Atletico Madrid man.

"We were talking before, when he first came, even as players we were sitting there with doubts really," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“A young kid just coming to Manchester United, and we needed to win every year.

"How were we going to do that with a young kid, who was inexperienced and looked like he was lacking confidence?

"But you look where he is today and that's a sign of someone who has worked hard to get where he needs to get."

There is no doubt that De Gea is now in the conversation for the best goalkeeper in the world right alongside Jan Oblak, Gianluigi Buffon, Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois.

For the past few years, the rumours surrounding his future and desire to move to Real Madrid refuse to go away, but his performance in Seville proves exactly why United cannot afford to lose the 27-year-old.
