Something just isn't right between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba right now.

The club's record signing has entered 2018 in torrid form and it seems that his relationship with the Special One is deteriorating with every fixture. Moreover, the decision to play 21-year-old Scott McTominay in his place against Sevilla didn't help the situation.

Nevertheless, Pogba did take to the field early on after Ander Herrera sustained an injury yet failed to impress in a cagey affair at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

The majority of the doubts surrounding Pogba regard his positional play and how, when given more defensive duties, the Frenchman has been allover the place.

There's a quiet understanding that the 24-year-old has offensive qualities of the highest order but just can't deliver the goods with only Nemanja Matic by his side.

Tension between Pogba and Mourinho continues

Some believe Pogba should get a grip and adjust to Mourinho's system, whereas others think that he is so talented that the Special One should bow his preferences and strengths.

However, there's reason to suggest the writing has been on the wall for sometime regarding Pogba's positioning shortcomings at Old Trafford.

Just three months into his Manchester United return and Gary Neville was expressing those very worries, noting that Pogba looked 'confused' and you'd be mistaken for thinking that not a whole lot has changed.

Gary Neville had it worked out in October 2016

Amidst the tepid 0-0 with Liverpool and 4-0 thrashing at Chelsea, he noted: "Pogba is no doubt confused.

"He has been signed for such a huge fee and I look at him and it was a difficult day for him. It was difficult for him at times at Anfield as a No.10 so, at the moment, I think Jose Mourinho is trying to find a way to incorporate him and when you sign a player for that level of money, you somehow have to make it fit.

"That is a conundrum that Jose Mourinho is going to have to solve. Finding the right partners in midfield or partner for him, who plays on the width alongside him – he’s got a lot questions to answer for himself, Jose Mourinho.

“He’ll be thinking I’ve tried him, I’ve tried that there. At the moment, it must be changing week-by-week by what he’s seeing.”

Neville's suspicions are ringing true now and there's every reason to suggest Mourinho still hasn't found a way to 'make it fit.'

And yet, effectively accommodating Pogba would go along way to improving United's attacking play with season with McTominany, in actual fact, providing defensive midfield cover.

Whether or not that's how things pan out going forward, though, is unknown but the drama is casting an unwanted shadow over an already tumultuous spell at Old Trafford.

These positional flaws simply cannot go on for another 15 months.
