Just like a year before their bout in a boxing ring, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are all over the media.

Mayweather, a 50-0 boxer who was also a five-weight world champion, defeated McGregor via a 10th round stoppage when they met last August, but the 41-year-old began teasing an MMA run to kick off 2018.

He shot videos of himself in the octagon and admitted he was in negotiations with the UFC.

However, he has since said the negotiations are over and McGregor has already said he would only meet Money Mayweather again if it was inside the octagon.

“I am happy for Floyd and his recent announcement that he is out of these current fight negotiations,” McGregor wrote on Instagram.

“My game is a very unforgiving one. It is not like other games. I understand completely him staying retired. I will now carry on in my negotiations and see where it goes.

TMZ caught up with UFC president Dana White, though, and it seems as though that fight could be happening after all.

"The only way a rematch makes sense in that fight is in the UFC," White said regarding the Mayweather situation before stating: "He absolutely should be worried about his skills" on facing McGregor in the octagon.

As you can see in the video below, White admitted that he is always talking to Mayweather's representatives and he suggested that McGregor is only really interested in a big money rematch with Mayweather. However, he stopped short of saying they are in 'active negotiations'.

White also confirmed that McGregor will be stripped of his UFC lightweight title before the fight Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 223.

The UFC president says McGregor "might never return" because of the sheer amount of money he made from the Mayweather bout.

So, McGregor is dropping his UFC belt without defending it (again) and wants some time off from the UFC. However, he is interested in fighting Mayweather for another big payday and those discussions appear to be ongoing.

The fact that McGregor is so willing to vacate his belt is extremely telling in this instance. He has been inactive for six months now, eight months by the time Ferguson and Nurmagomedov clash - what would he be waiting for?
