Despite all the campaigning down the years, racism remains an ever-present issue in modern-day football that continues to show no signs of wavering.
Players to have been subjected to racism over the past 12 months include Chelsea‘s Antonio Rudiger and Nice’s Mario Balotelli, whose experience made headlines earlier this month.
During a 3-2 defeat against Dijon in Ligue 1, the Italian striker complained to the match referee about the racist chants but actually ended up being shown a yellow card.
Containing racism has proved tough in Europe and on Thursday night, during Atalanta vs Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, Michy Batshuayi was on the receiving end of abuse.
In the footage below, you can clearly hear Atalanta’s fans making monkey noises towards Batshuayi, who can also be seen gesticulating towards them.
BATSHUAYI RACIALLY ABUSED VS ATLANTA
Disgraceful behaviour. Batshuayi was visibly frustrated at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia and following the game, he posted a strong tweet in protest.
In the post below, the 24-year-old expressed shock at being racially abused but then trolled the Atalanta fans having just knocked them out of the Europa League.
BATSHUAYI’S PERFECT RESPONSE
Good on you, Michy. Racism has no place in football and Batshuayi’s tweet is a timely reminder of how it shouldn’t even exist in the modern game.
Being racially abused isn’t about to dampen his mood at Dortmund, though, following what has been a fantastic start to life in Germany.
Having been forced out of Chelsea on loan last month, Batshuayi has scored five goals in five appearances for Dortmund, including two in the Europa League.
