Arsenal progressed to the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday night after beating Swedish minnows Ostersunds 4-2 on aggregate.

Arsene Wenger's side carried a 3-0 advantage into the second leg and proceeded to produce a dismal display at the Emirates, losing 2-1 after finding themselves two goals down at half-time.

The Gunners had rested a number of key players in preparation for Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Manchester City - but that was no excuse for the embarrassing performance.

A 47th minute Sead Kolasinac goal steered Arsenal clear of a humiliating elimination.

Arsenal are hoping to emulate Manchester United by winning the Europa League to qualify for next season's Champions League.

However, they will be put to the sword if they produce another performance like this in the latter stages of the competition.

Keown singles out two below-par Arsenal players

Legendary Arsenal defender Martin Keown was far from impressed in the BT Sport studio and he had some harsh words for a couple of Arsenal midfielders.

"There are so many players on the pitch there, they get limited opportunities and it is worrying that they are not at the same level," said Keown on BT Sport. "It reflects on the training and how they are prepared mentally and physically.

"It was an embarrassing first-half performance.

"Whenever you play, you have to make your mark and they weren't at it.

"I'm looking at Iwobi, wondering what direction his career is going in. He is getting so many opportunities but there is a list of players out here tonight that won't be happy with their performance."

Keown also had some strong words for Mohamed Elneny, criticising the Egyptian midfielder for his role in Ostersunds second goal.

“Within the build-up for that, Elneny, I’m not sure he knows his role and responsibilities in midfield,” he told BT Sport.

“I watched Rakitic and saw Busquets play the other evening and they sat in midfield.

“Elneny is running ahead of (Jack) Wilshere, Wilshere’s coming back and is the deep-lying man.

“Know your responsibility in the team, the protection is not there.

“You’ve got to protect these two young central defenders, especially when the two full-backs push forward like they do.”

Keown makes an excellent point but Elneny should really never be compared to the likes of Sergio Busquets.
