Chris Eubank Jr. has been offered a wealth of advice following his defeat to George Groves in last Saturday’s World Boxing Super Series semi-final.‘Next Gen’ doesn’t have a full-time trainer, insisting: “I know what I’m doing, I don’t need that instruction,” but Groves, Tony Bellew and David Haye have all come out and told the 28-year-old to hire one.“Find yourself a teacher and not a cheerleader,” Bellew remarked. “Give Ronnie Davies the credit and respect he is due - he is a brilliant coach. Let the man have an input.“I speak from experience because I've had a cheerleader as a coach before. Cheerleaders are great for your ego but they do nothing for you in a real fight.”Haye added: “Not having a trainer was pre-fight hype - there's no boxer who thinks a trainer can't help them.”

Nigel Benn: Eubank Jr. needs to move on from his father

Former British boxer Nigel Benn, whose rivalry with Chris Eubank Sr. is the stuff of fighting legend, has a similar message for Eubank Jr.

Benn feels that the Brighton boxer is being held back by his father, and vowed to turn him into a “different fighter” if he worked with him.

“I’m not going to gloat, I’m really not going to gloat, because I feel that Eubank Jr. is a quality fighter but the difference is, he’s limited,” Benn told talkSPORT on Friday.

“I don’t know how many punches he throws in a second or whatever, but the difference is he never used a jab, no movement, nothing.

“And I’m watching his dad training him and I think ‘oh, that’s not it’.

“Me and my son Conor, we met Eubank Jr. three years ago when we were in Brighton training at Scott Welch’s gym and I said: ‘You’ve got to be your own man, you cannot emulate your dad, you can’t jump over him. Be yourself, be who you are. You’ve got to cut that umbilical cord, mate.’

“I guarantee you, if I had him for six weeks to eight weeks, he would be a different fighter.”

It remains to be seen whether Eubank Jr.’s latest setback will convince him to bring in a trainer, but it’s clear that something needs to change if he’s to reach his pinnacle.
