Cristiano Ronaldo always speaks about silencing the haters and boy has he done that in 2018.
By the Portuguese's very high standards, he had made a slow start to the 2017-18 campaign and struggled to perform in La Liga. Now, though, his tally stands at an ominous 26 goals in 30 appearances.
Not so bad, huh? And the five-time Ballon d'Or winner continued his purple patch with a brilliant performance against Alaves in a 4-0 thrashing.
Ronaldo gave Los Blancos the lead in the 44th minute before doubling his tally midway through the second-half to score either side of a Gareth Bale strike.
Victory at the Bernebeu would help Real Madrid to usurp Valencia in the La Liga standings and close within 11 points of Barcelona, although Blaugrana have a game in-hand.

And Real Madrid had a chance to bolster their goal difference even more, too, when they were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds to make it 4-0.
Usually, you would expect Ronaldo to claim the ball and bag another goal for his immaculate record, but the 33-year-old passed up the opportunity and allowed Karim Benzema to dispatch the spot kick.
That's despite the fact Ronaldo was on for a hat-trick.

Yes, really. Whether you think it's fair or not, Ronaldo has something of a reputation for being selfish and if nothing else, he is Real's number one penalty taker and is even given the questionable nickname of 'Penaldo.'
That wasn't the attitude today, however, and Benzema rewarded him for his selflessness by finding the net in what has been a difficult season for the Frenchman.

Furthermore, some fans believe Ronaldo thanked his strike partner earlier in the match, too, by pointing at Benzema after his opening goal to suggest the credit actually lay elsewhere.
You've got to tip your hat to Ronaldo for his behaviour here and it's a big two fingers to rumours of supposed selfishness.
That being said, Benzema could probably do with a little more than a point from Ronaldo and a penalty to truly quell criticism at the Bernabeu.
