No one can deny that Tottenham are absolutely flying right now, but one player who is certainly not at his highest point is Dele Alli. The mercurial English midfielder has had a poor season by the stunning standards he set last season - where he scored 18 goals in the Premier League alone. So far in 2017/18, he has only managed five in 27 appearances, however, he has contributed seven assists along the way.Nevertheless, he hasn't been at his best, with most of his time this season spent in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Most of it has been down to his apparent fondness of diving, something which reared its head again in Sunday's 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace.Alli once again appeared to go down very theatrically under a 'challenge' from Wayne Hennessy, with pundits Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both tweeting that they thought it was a dive.

Most would agree with the pair, however, Eric Dier has decided to take a swipe at them, stating that they are living by double standards.

He said: “I’m sure they probably both dived in their careers. These things happen. Obviously, because it’s Dele, I think it probably gets more attention than it deserves.

“If you take the action in the game against Liverpool, where he got booked for diving, I was standing right behind him. When he’s running towards the ball, he’s taken a touch and it looks like the guy is about to come and take him out.

"There a sense of ‘I need to get out of the way’. If he then goes and stops, it’s difficult. That’s a difficult situation.

“I don’t think he pays any attention to it and I think that’s the most important thing. All he needs to pay attention to is how his team-mates feel and how the manager sees him and how his family see him, and the rest really is irrelevant.

“One of the beautiful things about football is everyone has an opinion, but it doesn’t mean everyone’s opinion is right.

"It’s difficult because nowadays with Twitter and Instagram and every other social media outlet, and the internet, everyone has an opinion and you have to sift through it to find the right one.

"That’s why I say for every footballer, myself included, we just need to focus on the people that matter to us – the manager, our team-mates and our family. I don’t think what anyone else says should really bother us.”
