Back in 2007, a lad by the name of Cristiano Ronaldo was beginning to make a real name for himself at Manchester United.

After nearly four years of finding his feet and slowly improving, the Portuguese winger suddenly exploded into life, scoring 17 goals in 37 appearances during the 2006/07 season.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side would go on to win the Premier League that season, with Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney two of the key reasons behind their success.

One thing that was really beginning to show was Ronaldo's sheer confidence in his own ability and his ego was typified in an FA Cup quarter-final replay vs Middlesbrough back in March 2007.

The two sides had drawn 2-2 at the Riverside and the second fixture at Old Trafford resulted in a 1-0 win for United, with Ronaldo scoring a penalty to secure progress to the semi-final.

After the game, Southgate was adamant that Ronaldo dived to win the spot kick, although replays did show that contact was indeed made by Jonathan Woodgate.

And, in his post-match interview, the now five-time Ballon d'Or winner delivered one of his finest quotes.

RONALDO AT HIS FINEST

"For me it's a penalty," he said. "Why when Cristiano is involved is it always polemic? You need to see it on the television. I felt the contact. This is why I went down. He touched me."

When asked whether he could have stayed on his feet, he said: "Yeah, but if you touch me I lose my movement and that is why I go down. Because he kicked me. Why does controversy follow me? I don't know. For me, it's a penalty. Maybe someone doesn't like, maybe because I'm too good. I don't know."

'Maybe because I'm too good', classic Ronaldo.

Don't you just miss it when Ronaldo was as cocky, if not worse, than Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Now, he's all grown up at Real Madrid, kind of.
