It’s easy to forget just how good Wesley Sneijder was during his career.

You need to be some player to have played for the likes of Ajax, Real Madrid and Inter Milan during your career, as well as winning 133 caps for the Netherlands.

But there’s a belief that the Dutchman has wasted the second-half of his career.

Halfway through the 2012/13 season, Sneijder’s Inter career was in doubt due falling out of favour and a dispute over his contract. At the age of 28, there were still plenty of top European clubs interested in signing him.

However, he shocked everyone by signing for Turkish side Galatasaray.

WHY SNEIJDER REJECTED LIVERPOOL

One of those clubs that were reportedly keen to sign to sign Sneijder was Liverpool.

And, in a recent interview, the midfielder has revealed exactly why he turned down the Reds in favour of Galatasaray - taking a massive dig at the Merseyside club in the process.

“Many clubs wanted to know when I was leaving Inter, and Liverpool was one of those clubs, so people were surprised I chose Galatasaray,” he said, per the Liverpool Echo.

“Why Galatasaray and not Liverpool? Because I am a winner, I play for prizes, so I went to Galatasaray because I thought that I would win more at Galatasaray and be champion than at Liverpool, and I think afterwards that I made the right choice.

“I have had nice years in Turkey.”

Ouch.

Many believed that Sneijder’s move to Galatasaray would be a brief one before he returned to a major European league. However, he spent the following four-and-a-half campaigns in the Super Lig, lifting two league titles and three Turkish cups.

Sneijder then spent five months at Nice, making just eight appearances. But after being released by the French side, he’s since joined Qatari side Al-Gharafa, where he’s been since January.

Only he knows whether or not he’s actually glad he joined Galatasaray instead of Liverpool back in January 2013.
