It’s safe to say, you don’t get many better than John Force in drag racing. The American is a 16-time Funny Car champion and a 20-time champion car owner, not to mention his 144 career victories. However, things didn’t quite go to plan for the 68-year-old at the weekend, far from it in fact.During the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Force’s engine blew up before his car spun out of control, hitting Jonnie Lindberg’s vehicle via the crash barriers. Both drivers were then tangled and dragged onto the opposite barriers where both cars' bodies blew off before coming to a stop. You can watch the action unfold below:

The crash came two weeks after his daughter Brittany was hospitalised after a coming together in California.

It comes as no surprise that Force was then taken to hospital as well, following the incident but amazingly, was later released on Sunday night.

The 68-year-old is expected to be fit enough to attend an autograph-signing event in Wisconsin on Wednesday.

The racing legend came away with nothing more than a shake-up but it could have been a whole lot worse.

In 2007, he was involved in another far more serious crash when he broke both of his legs and an arm.

His injuries were so extensive, Force required six hours of reconstructive surgery just to get back on his feet again.

You get the sense that if he can recover from that and get back behind the wheel, an engine explosion is unlikely to make him consider retiring just yet.
