Let's be honest, video assistant referee (VAR) has been a complete shambles since being introduced to English football.VAR has been in use in selected domestic cup matches this year, and there was much optimism that it would eradicate any mistakes made my referees and make football even better. However, it seems that it's use has only caused even more problems.Earlier on this month, Juan Mata had the ball in the back of the net for Manchester United vs Huddersfield, and the Spaniard wheeled away in celebration thinking he had given his side a two goal lead. However, after many minutes and in controversial circumstances, VAR eventually ruled the goal as offside.Despite that proving to be the correct decision, the image shown live on BT Sport of VAR making the call endured the wrath of football fans, forcing Hawk-Eye to apologise in a statement to Man United. And, just a few weeks after that incident, VAR has caused even more fury in the football world.

TOTTENHAM VS ROCHDALE MARRED IN CONTROVERSY

Just six minutes into the game, VAR was called after Tottenham appeared to go 2-0 up against Rochdale.

Again, after many minutes of deliberation, Fernando Llorente was adjudged to have fouled an opponent, forcing the goal to be ruled out.

That is despite many, including BT Sport commentator Robbie Savage, thinking that there was no infringement and that the goal should have stood. VAR was used again numerous times later on in the half, including when Spurs were given a penalty for a foul on Kieran Trippier.

After the game Danny Rose also made a scathing rant against VAR, and what he said was absolutely spot on.

"It’s just complete nonsense if you ask me, waiting around and not knowing what is happening," said Rose. "It is ridiculous, just ridiculous. The referee was open to explaining his decisions but I feel for Rochdale.

"Some of their players said it was their first time at Wembley and it was completely overshadowed. It could have been a nice occasion for them.

"I have no idea how you improve it [VAR], but what I experienced last night was not good at all.

"I have had a few messages from friends saying it is a shambles. It has been the same in every round it’s been used in the FA Cup.

"How can you go from a free-flowing game of football for 90 minutes to stopping for one or two minutes for a decision? It is what it is and we just have to get on with it."

Spot on, Danny. VAR is currently ruining game after game, seeming to spark controversy whenever it is used.

Although technology could be used to improve the sport, VAR is is doing the complete opposite, proving to be more of a hinderance than a help.
