Say what you like about Paul Gascoigne, but English football has seldom seen such a talent.

Speak to anybody who played alongside the Newcastle-born star and they could speak for hours about Gascoigne the person and Gascoigne the footballer. The 50-year-old had as much in personality as he had in skill on the football pitch.

Since hanging up his boots in 2004, though, it has been a difficult story for Gascoigne who has battled alcoholism and addiction to prescription drugs.

However, everybody was buoyed to hear he was back on the road to recovery in 2018, despite the loss of his father, with a number of talks and an emotional appearance on ITV's 'Loose Women.'

And the latest visit on Gascoigne's agenda came in the form of a trip to Everton's training ground on Friday afternoon, meeting with the players and coaches at Finch Farm.

Rooney hands Gascoigne £40 at Everton

Gascoigne plied his trade at Goodison Park between 2000 and 2002 and came across a familiar face in Wayne Rooney who was rising through the ranks at the time.

As the cameramen and journalists watched the two England legends embrace, there was a funny moment as Rooney emerged with two £20 notes which he proceeded to hand to Gascoigne.

Eh? Well, the reason behind the gesture is actually rather amusing and it proves a long standing joke between the pair which Gascoigne explained on SoccerAM in 2015.

Beer money for 14-year-old Rooney

Rooney was jokingly paying back Gascoigne for money he had given him during their time at Everton and the score behind it is brilliant.

The 50-year-old revealed: "When I was at Everton I used to go and watch the youth team play, the Under 19s, before we played.

"I think it was Colin Harvey (in charge) at the time and he said to watch this young kid, he's 14 and playing for the Under 19s.

"I thought I'd stay and watch for a little bit and he came on when they were getting beat 1-0 with 20 minutes to go.

"He banged in two goals. I think you can watch them on TV - they're incredible. What a player. I thought he's going to be good.

"After the game I went in and said: 'well done lads, I've got £40 spare, is anyone going out tonight?'

"Wayne Rooney said 'I am', so I went 'here's £40 quid, go and get yourself a couple of pints
tonight.' That's when I knew he was going to be brilliant. He's got potential, that lad. He's never given the £40 back so the interest is about £1.2million now!"

Rooney nailing £40-worth of pints at age 14 probably isn't his most professional decision but a funny little anecdote nonetheless.

And, if nothing else, it's just brilliant to see two of England's greatest ever talents together again.
