If results go Liverpool’s way this weekend, they could take a giant step to qualifying for Champions League football next season. While Spurs comfortably beat Huddersfield at Wembley earlier in the day, a victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side would see them go second for the time being. They would then be able to sit back and hope Manchester City can beat fifth-placed Chelsea on Sunday. If Pep Guardiola’s side do them a favour, Liverpool would be seven points clear of the Blues as they both tussle for a top-four finish. They will then hope former boss Roy Hodgson can pull off an unlikely result against Manchester United on Monday. But Liverpool will just need to do their own job against Newcastle as they welcome Rafa Benitez back to Anfield. But you wouldn’t blame the Merseysiders for having one eye on the upcoming week. While they don’t need to worry too much about Tuesday Champions League last-16 second-leg against Porto thanks to their 5-0 victory in the first-leg, they might be thinking about their clash against United next weekend.Liverpool travel to Jose Mourinho’s side on Saturday lunchtime in what is one of the most eagerly-anticipated fixtures of the season.

LIVERPOOL FANS DON'T WANT CAN TO START

But one player that might not be available is Emre Can.

The German has picked up nine yellow cards in the league this season and, if he collects another one against Newcastle, he will be suspended for two matches.

It would be a massive blow to have Can suspended for the visit to the Theatre of Dreams so, after he was named in the starting XI against Newcastle, there were plenty of worried Liverpool fans.

Just check out the reaction:

However, after naming his starting line-up, Klopp appeared to suggest he had very little choice but to name Can in the XI. The German manager already revealed Georginio Wijnaldum would miss the match against his former club due to an illness, while he claimed James Milner had picked up a knock.

"Millie got a knock in the last game; he is in really good shape so we thought long about what he could do,” Klopp said.

Everyone will just be hoping Can doesn’t pick up a silly yellow card…
