The career of Stoke City striker Saido Berahino hit an embarrassing low on Friday, when his own manager said he wasn’t fit enough to play for the club.
Berahino has failed to hold down a regular spot in the starting line-up at the bet365 Stadium and, shockingly, he hasn’t scored a goal in more than two years.
"He's not up to my level of fitness," Paul Lambert said on Friday. "He's a fit lad, but there's got to be more to it, that he's got to work on.
"I have told him that, so he knows the situation and what I'm explaining. I think he's been really good with me working away at it, but it has to come from him as well.
"We have given him a wee programme to stick to as well. We're in a situation where we need everyone to perform when they're called upon."
Berahino, who has represented England at under-21 level, is still just 24-years-old but you have to wonder how many more opportunities he’s going to get.
Surely Stoke will eventually decide he’s not worth having on the wage bill?
Harry Redknapp has destroyed Saido Berahino
Indeed, Harry Redknapp is fed up of Berahino and he’s not even his manager.
The former Tottenham Hotspur manager is on BT Sport on Saturday afternoon and he let rip when Berahino’s name was mentioned.
When the presenter reminded Redknapp that Berahino hasn’t scored in more than two years, the 71-year-old sarcastically replied: “That’s good of him. He deserves a round of applause.
“What a waste of talent he is. He’s never fit, every manger he’s had he’s not fit enough to play. What a disgrace.
“He’s got ability - when’s he going to start using it?
“His manager comes out and says he’s not fit enough to play. How sad is that, that he can’t keep himself fit enough to play?
“We’re not talking about injuries, we’re just talking about physical fitness.”
