Liverpool ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Newcastle United on Saturday, leapfrogging Manchester United into second place in the process.Goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane sealed the win as Rafa Benitez’s return to Anfield ended in defeat.A number of Jurgen Klopp’s players performed well, including the aforementioned two, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Loris Karius. And another player who quietly stepped up was Jordan Henderson. The midfielder isn’t everyone’s favourite player and there’s a genuine case to be made as to whether he’s at the level required to captain Liverpool. But against Newcastle he played well, patrolling the middle of the park and producing some lovely passes.

What was said about Henderson on MOTD

Yet football fans feel that Gary Lineker and Match of the Day might have taken it a little too far in their post-match Henderson love-in.

It began with Lineker suggesting that Henderson could start for England at the World Cup and continued with Danny Murphy dissecting the 27-year-old’s passing.

“It’s not inconceivable that [Oxlade-Chamberlain] could end up in a partnership in midfield with his Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson,” Lineker said.

Then Murphy took over.

Many fans felt that it was all a bit too much for a player who hasn’t set the Premier League alight.

Klopp: The crowd help up massively

Klopp watched his side cruise to a comfortable win and later expressed his delight with the mood among the fans at the moment.

“The faith and the trust of the crowd improved,” the German said, per Liverpool’s website.

“You always have to earn things like this and with a few performances we earned it.

“I think people are now more convinced that it can happen at one moment in the game than they were before. That helps massively.

“That’s what I meant when I said we have to create this situation together.”

On Salah, who scored his 32nd goal of the season, Klopp added: “I love the goals he’s scored, I love his assists. I really love this player, how he is doing so well and thank God he is still healthy and fit and all that stuff.”
