Manchester United head into their trip to Crystal Palace tonight in the hope of usurping Liverpool and building upon their promising victory over Chelsea last week.

Jose Mourinho will be going into the Selhurst Park clash feeling confident, with the Red Devils boasting an impressive record against the London club in recent years. Since Palace returned to the Premier League in 2013, United have produced nine victories and one draw against them.

Pretty good going, huh? In fact, the last time they suffered defeat against Palace came back in 2011 when the south London club actually plied their trade in the Championship.

Not only that, but the game fell during the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson, under the lights of Old Trafford and just one game away from a potential League Cup semi-final.

Nevertheless, Ferguson opted for a rather experimental starting XI and some left-field substitutions that helped Palace to a 2-1 victory.

Darren Ambrose gave the visitors the lead with a stunning strike in the 65th minute, which would later go down as Mitre's Goal of the Year, before a Federico Macheda penalty equalised. Palace just had too much in extra time, though, with Glenn Murray heading home a dramatic winner.

So, ahead of United's latest clash with the Eagles, below is Ferguson's team that lost that day and where they've wound up since - take a look:

GK | Ben Amos

One of only seven appearances Amos would ever make for United, the Englishman wasn't at fault for any of Palace's goals on the night. Now resides on loan at Charlton Athletic via spells with Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City.

RB | Rafael

The club's on-and-off choice at right-back spent seven years at Old Trafford and accumulated 169 appearances before leaving in 2015. Now into his third season at Lyon where he continues to tick over nicely.

CB | Chris Smalling

One of only two players in the starting XI that remain at the club, Smalling has enjoyed more game-time this season after Eric Bailly's long-term injury.

CB | Jonny Evans

A criminally underrated centre-back more often not, the Northern Irishman eventually turned his back on the Theatre of Dreams in 2015 after nine years and 198 outings. His form at West Brom ever since has attracted the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.

LB | Fabio

The less successful brother of the 'Da Silva' clan at Old Trafford began to lose game-time at the club during the 2011-12 season before leaving two years later. Now represents Championship side Middlesbrough.

CM | Antonio Valencia

You'd be forgiven for thinking Valencia's time was up at Manchester United as recently as 2016, yet the Ecuadorian has been a class above since Jose Mourinho's arrival. He's arguably the Premier League's finest right-back on current form.

CM | Darron Gibson

Things never quite worked out for Gibson at Old Trafford and this was one of his final appearances for the club ahead of a January switch to Everton. Five years on Merseyside eventually saw him move to Championship strugglers Sunderland.

CM | Ji-Sung Park

The ultimate United cult hero and in his final season at the club. Park would eventually move to QPR in a forgettable two year spell, only to retire in 2014 after a season with PSV Eindhoven.

CF | Dimitar Berbatov

On the back of sharing the Premier League Golden Boot with Carlos Tevez, Berbatov was another player trundling towards the end of his United career. The Bulgarian enjoyed a decent spell with Fulham, seasons with Monaco and PAOK and now resides at the Kerala Blasters.

ST | Mame Biram Diouf

His final game in a United shirt came this particular night and a move to Hannover 96 arrived less than two months later. Three seasons in the Bundesliga would eventually see him return to England with Stoke City.

ST | Federico Macheda

The goalscorer on the night and his last goal for United at that. Macheda will always be remembered for his brilliant strike against Aston Villa but his career has tailed off since - now culminating at Serie B side Novara.

First sub | Zeki Fryers

Failed to impress during this final season with United and he didn't fare much better upon his second chance at the top with Tottenham. Currently with Barnsley via Crystal Palace, Rotherham United and Ipswich Town.

Second Sub | Ravel Morrison

Oh what could have been. Morrison was regarded as one of the greatest young talents United ever saw yet, like many others, this was his final game for the club. Now with Mexico's Club Atlas after time with QPR and Lazio.

Third Sub | Paul Pogba

Yes, one of only seven appearances during Pogba's first spell with United came on this fateful night and it was a game to forget for the Frenchman. Nevertheless, he has returned to the club that made him after four years with Juventus.
