Michael Gray has announced his decision to retire following his release from Sheffield Wednesday last week.

The 35-year-old, who arrived at Wednesday on a free transfer from Wolves in February 2009 after an initial loan spell, revealed he had made his decision earlier this season before the Owls lurched into a relegation struggle.

Gray told the club's official website: "It came to mind about six months ago, I sat down with my family and decided I was going to finish at the end of the season and I've stuck to that decision."

He added: "I kept it to myself because obviously we found ourselves in a sticky situation and I didn't want it to come out in the middle of the season.

"I've had a chat with the manager and he wished me all the best in whatever I come to do after football and I do think that now is the time to bow out."

Gray, capped three times by England, made a total of 600 senior appearances during his long playing career that also included spells at hometown club Sunderland, Celtic, Blackburn and Leeds.
