What Gary Neville told Lee Dixon when Arsenal signed Shkodran Mustafi in 2016

These are very dark times for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal Football Club.

Since the turn of 2018, the Gunners have lost eight out of 14 games in all competitions, dropped out of the FA Cup, lost in the Carabao Cup final and fallen 13 points behind the top four.

Wenger looks exhausted and out of ideas while the players have embarrassed themselves with some pathetic performances.

Arsenal fans want change, starting with Wenger stepping down as manager and then an overhaul of the current squad in the summer transfer window.

And if truth be told, that’s exactly what’s needed at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal have the talent but that pales into insignificance when the players simply can’t work as a team.

One player that Arsenal fans want gone at the end of the season is Shkodran Mustafi, who has come under huge criticism lately for his displays against Manchester City and Brighton.

Against City in the Carabao Cup final, it was the Germany international who allowed Sergio Aguero to outmuscle him and run through on goal, beating David Ospina to make it 1-0.

Mustafi was labelled as “pathetic” by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville for his role in the Aguero goal, to which the centre-back said he didn’t care.

“When you lose a final, the last thing that you care about is what people say because you know you have been to a final, you lost the game and you are disappointed,” he said.

“You don’t even want to hear what people say and I haven’t. I still don’t know what he (Neville) has been talking about. It is something that is outside [the club]. People like to talk.

“We don’t need people from outside telling us what we are doing wrong and what we are doing right.”

Mustafi was once again at fault during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton and now Lee Dixon has revealed what Neville said to him when Arsenal signed the German two years ago.

Neville managed Mustafi during his time as Valencia manager and told Dixon in 2016 that he “couldn’t believe” Arsenal spent £35 million on him.

Furthermore, Neville said Valencia once “couldn’t give away” the 25-year-old – that’s how bad he was for the Spanish club.

Says it all really. Dixon was speaking as a guest at the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust AGM on Monday night, where he also said: “Mustafi… don’t get me started on him.”
