It was a night to forget for Paris-Saint Germain and Kylian Mbappe against Real Madrid on Tuesday. The French juggernauts entered the tournament as one of the favourites to win and approached their round of 16 clash with Real buoyed by their opponent's poor league form. Something about the Champions League just seems to bring the best out in Los Blancos, though.Criticism was rife for Mbappe, too, who endured one of his worst performances of the season with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane keeping him under wraps all night. The Frenchman has thoroughly impressed this season since his move from AS Monaco and has delivered 16 goals and 11 assists. However, he struggled to deliver that degree of quality during the biggest game of his PSG career and without the mercurial Neymar by his side.

Mbappe fails to impress against Real Madrid

The pitfalls of his performances didn't avoid the gaze of BT Sports' star-studded punditry line-up either who saw the game as something of a reality check for the 19-year-old.

Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard both lamented the nature of Mbappe's showing, but reiterated that the game will prove a learning curve for him and that his career hopes remain lucrative.

When the topic of Mbappe surfaced, Ferdinand stated: "This is the first day he looked like a teenager.

Ferdinand: Watershed match for the 19-year-old

"That's testament to the way he's been playing over this last year or 18 months, he's been fantastic and you still thought, if they can get the ball to him in the right areas, he'd still have that talent there.

"In the second-half he was a bit more aggressive with the way he played, but today just wasn't his day."

Lampard then added his two cents, noting: "I think every big player, and he's going to be a big player no matter what, has a game early on when you realise that the level is and I think today he realised what the level is."

Ferdinand on playing against Ronaldo in 2002

It was a point Ferdinand completely agreed with and prompted him to reflect: "Like Frank said, there are games in your career, I played against Brazil in the World Cup with Ronaldo and Rivaldo.

"And I came off the pitch thinking: 'I am way off! I've got to go back to the drawing board.'

"He won't be saying that he's way off but he'll know there's work to be done."

It's an important message, especially considering the hype around Mbappe at such an early age.

Nevertheless, it's nights like Tuesday and the defeat to Real Madrid that will test his resolve as a top talent and see whether he'll strain for self-improvement. He can't complain about inspiration for that, either, because he had a Cristiano Ronaldo-shaped example staring him in the face on the night.
