Hafthor Bjornsson, known as 'The Mountain' in Game of Thrones, has set a new deadlift world record as he went on to win the 2018 Arnold Strongman Classic.

After coming second overall in the 2017 event, the Icelandic 29-year-old went one better and successfully won his first ever Arnold Strongman Classic.

A ridiculous deadlift of 1041lbs, which is 74 stone, in effortless style, confirmed Bjornsson's success.

The Game of Thrones actor, who was also an Icelandic youth basketball player, led from the start of the five-round event as he placed first in the bag over the bar test, where he threw a 43kg bag over a 15ft bar.

Impressive displays in the second and third round extended Bjornsson's overall lead in events which included the stone shoulder round and the timber carry round.

It then came to the penultimate fourth round where Hafthor Bjornsson performed a breath-taking act of skill and brute strength to shock the audience and secure a new world record.

The 6ft 9in Icelandic beast even let out a casual nod to the crowd whilst holding the 472kg on the bar, before letting out a celebratory roar when the deadlift was finished, and his overall title was all but confirmed.

You can watch the ludicrous world record attempt in the video below.

This mammoth lift was the equivalent of lifting a grand piano or three adult male Panda Bears, which puts into perspective the sheer extent of this world record act.

A fifth placed position in the final Apollon Wheel event secured Bjornsson's title as he defeated four-time World's Strongest Man champion Brian Shaw, who finished second respectfully.

After this display to start the 2018 season, Bjornsson will be hoping to better his second-place finishes in the last two World Strongest Man competition later in the year, beaten by Shaw in 2016 and Brit Eddie Hall in 2017.
