Manchester City suffered their first home defeat since 2016 at the hands of Basel last night, but Pep Guardiola won't be losing sleep over it after their 4-0 demolition job in the first leg.The Spaniard played a slightly weakened side at the Etihad Stadium, although the likes of Bernardo Silva, Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus still made the cut. Nevertheless, it was the perfect opportunity for up and coming English talent Phil Foden to accumulate more game-time in the sky blue jersey.Fans have been excited by the 17-year-old even since his pre-season performance against Manchester United, which prompted Guardiola to state: “You (the media, fans) are the lucky guys who saw the first game, for the first team for Manchester City, of this guy.“It’s a long time since I saw something like this. His performance was another level. He’s 17-years-old, he’s a City player, he grew up in the academy, he loves the club, he’s a City fan and for us he’s a gift."It wasn't talk for the sake of it, either, with the ex-Barcelona boss following through on his praise by handing him 10 appearances this season and a further 89 minutes last night.

Twitter quietly impressed with Foden's performance

Moreover, it was another solid night for the 17-year-old who quietly impressed in his preferred midfield role - even if the Mirror only gifted him a rating of 6/10.

Fans on Twitter were also quietly impressed by Foden's performance, but were equally keen to draw attention to Brahim Diaz who was introduced to the Basel clash in the 66th minute.

The Spanish talent has also been handed greater game-time this season by Guardiola, yet not to the same degree as Foden and has made just one start in 2017-18.

Fans: Diaz is the real young talent in City's midfield

As a result, a number of fans were keen to mix their compliments to Foden with the point that his fellow midfield starlet deserves more publicity and perhaps even greater praise. Take a look at the tweets below:

An interesting point, even if Diaz's more offensive positioning may naturally incline people to view him as the more talented asset.

Nevertheless, there's perhaps substance in the fact Diaz should be given an equal amount of game-time, too. That's despite the fact he has David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Sane and Raheem Sterling to compete with.

If nothing else, though, it serves to underline that Manchester City are flying high in almost every department and that includes their youth system.

We can only hope that the talents of Foden and Diaz continue to get their chances they deserve in what must be considered one of the finest English sides in recent history.
