Former Liverpool number one Pepe Reina could be set to join a top European club this summer with his contract at Napoli coming to an end in June.
Following the signing of Simon Mignolet in 2013, Reina left Anfield and went overseas in a bid to revive his career.
After a successful loan spell at Napoli that saw him link up with former boss Rafa Benitez, the Spaniard secured a permanent switch to Bayern Munich where he acted as understudy to Manuel Neuer.
But after appearing just three times for the Bundesliga giants, Reina chose to return to Italy and Napoli where he found first team football far more forthcoming.
The World Cup winner has since made over 100 appearances for the club and is on the verge of guiding Napoli to their first league title since 1987.
Although it appears Reina won’t be sticking around for very long with his contract coming to an end in the summer as it transpires that AC Milan are ready to snap up the goalkeeper should he fail to re-sign for Napoli.
Milan sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli has confirmed that they are interested in bringing the 35-year-old to the San Siro.
Mirabelli told Sky Sports Italia: “We did inform Napoli that we want to speak to Pepe Reina’s agent, because we want to see if there’s a possibility of bringing the player to Milan.”
Milan’s search for a new goalkeeper comes as they battle to keep hold of 19-year-old prodigy Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Donnarumma has been linked with a move away from the San Siro despite signing a new four-year deal last summer, but there seems to be a growing acceptance in Milan that they will eventually lose their young keeper, hence the interest in Reina.
Despite spending big in 2017, Milan find themselves in seventh place in Serie A, 25 points adrift of league leaders Napoli.
Gennaro Gattuso has managed to steady the ship somewhat after a very shaky start to the campaign, and even if keeping Donnarumma seems far fetched, Mirabelli is keen to do what he can to ensure that Gattuso’s future remains with the club.
“We are always looking to the future. You all know that if I am here, then Gattuso will remain at Milan. He may well remain even without me!” Mirabelli added.News Now - Sport News
