Compare Real Madrid’s form in La Liga to their performances in Europe and you would think they were two different teams.

Currently third in the Spanish league, 15 points behind leaders Barcelona, the season has been a shambles on a domestic front for Los Blancos.

But there’s just something about the Champions League that brings the best out of Zinedine Zidane’s team.

Nothing highlights this better than Cristiano Ronaldo’s form. The Portuguese forward is averaging 1.5 goals per game in the Champions League this season compared to 0.76 in La Liga.

This week, Ronaldo helped Real Madrid knock out the team that many were predicting to go all in the way in Europe’s finest competition.

And it wasn’t even close. Madrid won in Spain and in France as they recorded a 5-2 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain to progress to the quarter-final.

Ramos produced an excellent display

PSG were without Neymar for the return fixture but to restrict a team that has scored 86 goals in 28 Ligue 1 matches this season to just two goals in 180 minutes is mightily impressive.

Together, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane were able to nullify the threat posed by Edinson Cavani and co., with the Spaniard doing what he so often does and stepping up in a big match.

Ramos turns 32 at the end of the month but he remains one of the finest centre-backs in the world.

And one moment perfectly supported that statement.

He produced one elite moment

It came when PSG were attacking in the second half, Kylian Mbappe advancing with the ball.

Ramos was initially marking Cavani but he stepped up to deny Mbappe a clear sight of goal, while still monitoring the Uruguayan.

When Mbappe passed to Dani Alves, Ramos changed direction in an instant and blocked the full-back’s cross.

It was a moment that proved Ramos remains an elite defender.

Watch: Ramos' elite defending v PSG

Ramos is aiming to lift the Champions League trophy for the fourth time in his career - and for the third season on the bounce - and, with Ronaldo peaking at the right time, there’s every chance of that happening.

By his own standards, the forward was disappointing in the opening half of the season.

But he’s found the net 15 times in his past nine matches in all competitions, including the opener against PSG on Tuesday.

Nobody will want to draw Los Blancos in the quarter-final, that’s for sure.
