Arsene Wenger has announced he will leave Arsenal at the end of the season, bringing to a close a two-decade stay at the club.

He's had his fair share of massive highs and depressing lows during his time in north London, with this current season particularly challenging for the Frenchman.

The Gunners sit sixth in the Premier League table with five games of the season remaining, although they could still qualify for the Champions League should they win the Europa League.

The team and manager have come in for criticism from fans and pundits, with Rio Ferdinand especially critical earlier this season.

"Confidence through the floor," the defender-turned-pundit tweeted. "Worst Arsenal TEAM I have seen in my time. Talent alone has never been enough."

Calling the current Arsenal team 'the worst ever' may be justified because of their recent performances, but it's not entirely accurate.

Back in 2011, during a Carling Cup clash between Arsenal and Manchester City, Wenger named what is widely regarded as his worst starting XI.

Here's how Arsenal lined up for the game - which they lost 1-0 by the way - and where the 11 players are now.

'WORST STARTING XI IN ARSENAL HISTORY'

Lukasz Fabianski: Spent seven seasons in north London as Arsenal's second-choice goalkeeper before joining Swansea City in 2014, where he's thrived.

Johan Djourou: Currently with Antalyaspor in Turkey, Djourou also left Arsenal in 2014 but still drops the odd comment on their Instagram page.

Laurent Koscielny: Koscielny turns 33 in September but remains Arsenal's best centre-back - which isn't saying much.

Sebastian Squillaci: Worst. Signing. Ever. Squillaci somehow lasted three years at Arsenal and retired last November following a four-year spell at Bastia.

Ignasi Miguel: The 25-year-old only ever made five Premier League appearances for Arsenal, who he left in 2014. Now plays for Malaga.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Mocked at Arsenal, lauded at Liverpool. Oxlade-Chamberlain has been a hit on Merseyside since his £35 million move last summer.

Emmanuel Frimpong: Still only 26 years old, Frimpong can be found playing in Cyprus for Ermis Aradippou (who?) as his career continues to decline.

Francis Coquelin: Stupidly sold in January to Valencia, despite him being Arsenal's only out-and-out defensive midfielder.

Yossi Benayoun: Stints at Queens Park Rangers, Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem have led Benayoun, 37, to Maccabi Petah Tikva.

Marouane Chamakh: Currently a free agent, to absolutely no one's surprise. Chamakh recently turned 34 and might as well just retire.

Park Chu-young: Arguably the weirdest signing Wenger has ever made. Chu-young is back at FC Seoul, where he began his senior career 13 years ago.
