For years, Arsenal ruled north London.

Spurs simply couldn’t finish above the Gunners in the Premier League, going 22 years without doing so. That was until last season, when Mauricio Pochettino’s side finished a comfortable 11 points clear of Arsenal.

And Spurs look set to make it two consecutive seasons in which they’ve finished above their rivals with them currently 13 points clear of Arsene Wenger’s side.

But despite the swing of momentum in north London, the rivalry still remains.

The two clubs have played out some incredible matches in the Premier League era and one of the most entertaining fixtures came back in April 2011.

The rivals played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Rafael van der Vaart bagging a brace for the home side.

But his two goals aren’t the only reason Van der Vaart will always look back fondly at that particular match.

That’s because he humiliated Jack Wilshere not once, but twice.

The Dutchman nutmegged Wilshere twice in the space of 10 seconds - much to the delight of the home fans.

And in the current issue of FourFourTwo, Van der Vaart was asked what was said between him and the Arsenal midfielder during the incident.

“I don’t remember him saying anything to me,” he said. “All I remember is what I said to him afterwards: ‘Close your legs next time!’”

“I had one of my best games that night. We went 1-0 down, I scored the equaliser, but then we let in two before pulling it back to 3-3, with me scoring another goal.

“Luka Modric missed a big chance to make it 4-3 towards the end, which was a pity because we needed to win. I don’t think the supporters had often experienced a derby quite as good as that one – it was an incredible match.”

Not just for that moment, but Van der Vaart became a fan favourite at White Hart Lane during his two years at the club with 24 goals in 63 league matches.
