Manchester United vs Liverpool is still one of the biggest fixtures in world football.

The two most successful clubs in England will go head-to-head once again at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime as they battle it out for second-place in the Premier League.

While there won’t be silverware on the line today, there was a trophy up for grabs when these two sides met back in 2007 in the FA Youth Cup final.

The two Under-18 sides met 11 years ago in a two-legged final with United winning at Anfield 2-1 in the first tie. However, Liverpool triumphed 1-0 at the Theatre of Dreams before lifting the trophy after prevailing on a penalty shootout.

But what happened to the 22 players that started the second-leg? They will around 28 or 29-years-old right now so they should have experienced a decent career in Premier League football, right?

Well, not quite.

Let’s take a look:

LIVERPOOL’S XI

GOALKEEPER | DANNY ROBERTS

The goalkeeper didn’t make the grade at Liverpool and moved to Bangor and Weymouth, before a move to Aberystwyth Town.

DEFENDER | STEPHEN DARBY

Darby made six appearances for Liverpool in three seasons, while enjoying loan spells at Swindon, Notts Country and Rochdale.

He left Liverpool for Bradford in 2012, before signing for Bolton last summer.

DEFENDER | MICHAEL BURNS

Burns left Liverpool immediately after their FA Youth Cup victory and joined Bolton - but failed to make the grade.

He then went to Carlisle, Stafford Rangers, Newport Country, Guiseley, Vauxhall Motors and was last seen playing for Gap Connah’s Quay in Wales.

DEFENDER | JAY SPEARING

While he's now playing as a defensive midfielder, Spearing played in defence for Liverpool’s youth team.

Spearing was one of the very few players that made the step up to the first-team, playing 55 times in total.

He left Bolton last summer after five seasons at the club and is now at League One Blackpool.

DEFENDER | ROBBIE THRELFALL

It appears Threlfall is currently without a club after failing to get a professional contract at Anfield.

He’s played for Bradford and Morecambe, but was released by the latter after the 2013/14 season.

During the 2016/17 season, he played semi-professionally for Marine before leaving in January 2017.

MIDFIELDER | CHARLIE BARNETT

Another player that failed to make it a Liverpool before he moved to fellow Merseyside club Tranmere Rovers.

He also had a spell at Accrington Stanley before he moved to AFC Telford - who he left in 2015.

MIDFIELDER | JIMMY RYAN

You guessed it, Ryan didn’t make an appearance for Liverpool either.

He did have a short spell at Shrewsbury before a three-year stint at Accrington Stanley.

Moves to Scunthorpe and then Chesterfield followed before signing for Fleetwood in 2015. He now also plays for Blackpool.

MIDFIELDER | RYAN FLYNN

Flynn also didn’t play for the first-team at Liverpool. Instead, he signed for Falkirk before he was snapped up by Sheffield United in 2011.

After five seasons at Bramall Lane, he moved to Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2016 before he recently signed for St Mirren.

MIDFIELDER | RAY PUTTERILL

Putterill actually played a match for Liverpool - only joking.

He was named on the bench for a League Cup match against Reading, though.

After getting released in 2009, Putterill played for the likes of Accrington Stanley, Rochdale and Marine.

He’s now without a club.

STRIKER | CRAIG LINDFIELD

Lindfield was a member of Liverpool’s 2008 Dallas Cup squad and was the tournament’s top goalscorer with six goals. Unfortunately, he had a double hernia operation soon afterward and was released before he played a competitive match.

He’s since moved his way down the leagues with Accrington Stanley, Macclesfield and Marine. He now plays for FC United of Manchester in the National League North.

STRIKER | ASTRIT AJDAREVIC

The Albanian has had quite the career with spells at Leicester and Charlton in England - as well as representing three different clubs in Sweden.

He now finds himself in Greece with AEK Athens.

Manchester United’s XI

GOALKEEPER | RON-ROBERT ZIELER

Zieler soon returned to his native Germany with Hannover, before coming back to England for a season with Leicester. He now finds himself in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart.

DEFENDER | RICHARD ECKERSLEY

Eckersley retired from football in 2016 - aged just 26. After making two league appearances for United, he moved to Burnley.

He then had a spell in the MLS with Toronto FC and New York Red Bulls. He went back to Oldham Athletic for the 2015/16 season but retired shortly afterward.

DEFENDER | CORRY EVANS

He failed to make an appearance for Man Utd but kickstarted his career at Hull City from 2011-2013. He’s since moved to Blackburn and is an ever-present in their side. He’s also been capped 34 times for Northern Ireland.

DEFENDER | KENNY STRICKLAND

Also had a youth spell at Chelsea but now finds himself at Marine in the Northern Premier League.

DEFENDER | JAMES CHESTER

A solitary League Cup appearance is all Chester managed at United. Like Evans, he also made a name for himself at Hull before a move to West Brom and, then, Aston Villa - where he now finds himself.

He’s also been capped 29 times for Wales.

MIDFIELDER | DANNY DRINKWATER

The midfielder stayed at the club until 2012 but failed to make a single appearance. He moved to Leicester in 2011 and incredibly helped them win the Premier League title during the 2015/16 season.

He’s now at Chelsea.

MIDFIELDER | DANNY GALBRAITH

Currently without a club after spells at Hibs, Limerick and Gillingham.

He played for York from 2015 but left the club after the 2016/17 season.

MIDFIELDER | SAM HEWSON

He was the captain of the side but didn’t play for the first-team. Rather incredibly, he moved to Iceland in 2011 to play for Fram, before moving to FH. He’s currently still in Iceland with Grindavik.

MIDFIELDER | DANNY WELBECK

Managed 142 appearances for United before leaving for Arsenal midway through the 2014/15 season. Has had his fair share of injury problems but is still playing at the top level and has earned 36 caps for England.

STRIKER | FEBIAN BRANDY

Brandy has played for almost every football league club either during a loan spell or permanently - including Hereford, Gillingham, Notts County, Walsall, Rochdale…. the list goes on.

He’s now at Ebbsfleet in the National League.

STRIKER | CHRIS FAGAN

Fagan also didn’t make the grade at United and had short spells at Lincoln City and Bohemians. He’s been at St Patrick’s in Ireland since 2012 and has made 162 league appearances, scoring 64 goals.
