A pitch invasion is rarely a comfortable experience for players, regardless of the motive or number of individuals who take part.Fan protests during West Ham’s 3-0 defeat to Burnley at the London Stadium on Saturday involved captain Mark Noble throwing an intruder to the ground before being ushered away by his teammates.Similar to what happened between Sergio Aguero and a Wigan supporter in the FA Cup last month, the incident served as a reminder of just how confronting such situations can be for players.Nobody was hurt on either of those occasions, but unfortunately, the same can’t be said for some of those caught up in ugly scenes after Lille drew 1-1 with Montpellier on Saturday. The home side are enduring a horrid campaign and occupy 19th position in Ligue 1 having taken a mere nine points from 30 on offer since the turn of the year.Manager Christophe Galtier has watched his men win only seven times at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this season, so it’s no wonder displeasure is growing among the Lille faithful.Frustration got the better of some at the weekend when the final whistle confirmed yet more points were dropped, prompting a large section of fans to rush onto the pitch.Roughly 200 supporters entered the field of play to insult, threaten and attack their own players following another poor result.According to ESPN, striker Nicolas Pepe and defender Adam Soumaoro were struck as stewards attempted to prevent fans storming the tunnel.“You're dirtying our jersey, you're dirtying our jersey,” they chanted at the squad along with a message to the club hierarchy: "If we go down, we'll take you down.”Watch the carnage unfold in the video below:

Speaking after the match, Lille boss Galtier empathised with angry supporters but believes they crossed the line.

"They are fans who lost control, but they are also fans who are unhappy and sad," Galtier said.

"I don't accept that my players are punched, that my players are treated this way. We will count the points at the end of the season. It's only one game.

"My players gave everything and have done so for a certain time now.

"I can understand the disappointment and the anger [of the fans], but my players are also disappointed and angry with themselves."

Regarding disciplinary action, the LFP have confirmed the matter will be investigated.

“The LFP firmly condemns the incidents that occurred last night the Pierre Mauroy stadium after the Lille v Montpellier game,” the governing body said in a statement.

“As soon as Thursday, the disciplinary commission will look into these incidents.”
