Several weeks ago a new contender emerged in the UFC's 145-pound division when Brian Ortega pulled off a shocking first round knockout win over Frankie Edgar in the co-main event of UFC 222 on pay-per-view (PPV).

Originally the event was supposed to be headlined by a featherweight title bout between champion Max Holloway and Edgar. Unfortunately "The Blessed One" suffered an injury that forced him off of the card. Edgar accepted the fight with "T-City" on late notice, which turned out to be a mistake.

Now Edgar has seemingly been pushed to the back of the line in the featherweight title picture, as UFC President Dana White has confirmed Ortega will receive the next shot at the title.

With featherweights such as Jeremy Stephens making claims for a title shot rather convincingly as well, Edgar may have to wait some time before getting back in the title picture.

One man who is rumored to be fighting Stephens to take the next step in the rankings is former champion Jose Aldo.

Aldo recently spoke about Edgar's downfall in the 145-pound division, calling his former foe's decision to fight Ortega on short-notice the 'biggest mistake' he could've made (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“It’s a new generation that’s coming in,” Aldo told Brazil’s “Giro Combate” show. “Age comes for everyone, and it’s normal to have this sort of rotation.

"To me, it wasn’t (surprising). I just thought it was a mistake on Edgar’s end to fight (Ortega), who’s a very tough guy.

"He would have fought for the title, risked that and lost. Now he’s all the way back there again.

“I think that was his biggest mistake. But I wasn’t surprised with the loss. That’s part of it.

"When you go in there, anyone can come out victorious, whether it’s via knockout or points, and that’s part of fighting."

What are your thoughts on Aldo saying that Edgar deciding to face Ortega on later notice was the 'biggest mistake' he could've made? Do you think Edgar should've waited for Holloway to return from injury instead? And what do you think is next for Aldo inside the Octagon?
