Liverpool chase Italian hitman

As talk of Fernando Torres’ exit from Anfield escalates, Giampaolo Pazzini has already been touted as his replacement.

Torres is reportedly the target of a £70 million offer from Premier League champions Chelsea after a poor season with the Merseysiders last term.

Rafael Benitez is low on world-class strikers even if Torres stays but, with their financial situation getting worse, Liverpool are likely to have to sell before they can foray into the transfer market.

Pazzini has been in sensational form for Sampdoria since leaving Fiorentina, scoring 30 goals in 56 games to fire the Italians into the Champions League.

Two sticking points to any possible deal will be a lack of Champions League football at Liverpool next campaign plus Sampdoria’s reluctance to sell.

As well as Pazzini, Liverpool have been linked with West Ham frontman Carlton Cole in recent weeks.

Cole would represent a much cheaper option for Benitez but Pazzini has scored more goals than Cole in almost half the amount of games.
